BERLINER SIEDLUNG MAINZ
Project type
Post war community housing redevelopement
Date
May 2025
Location
Mainz, Germany
The Berliner Siedlung is a post-war community housing scheme in need of modernization, improved connectivity, and increased residential capacity, while preserving its historical character and urban coherence.
This project explored multi-scale interventions—urban, block, and unit level—to enhance the existing built environment. By adding lightweight timber floors, the scheme increased housing density without overloading the original structures. Architectural and landscape interventions improved circulation, spatial quality, and visual coherence, while new terraces and building connections established meaningful, inhabitable territories. Every detail was carefully designed to balance functionality, aesthetics, and contextual sensitivity, ensuring the project respects both residents’ needs and urban heritage.
The design enhances livability, social interaction, and environmental performance of the housing blocks. It demonstrates a holistic approach to urban redevelopment, where architectural interventions improve quality of life at multiple scales while maintaining community identity.
